Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will present over 700 lots of American and European 19th & 20th century lighting at unreserved public auction on March 23 beginning at 9:30 am ET at the firm’s gallery located at 2177 Green Valley Lane, Mt. Crawford, VA.

The auction will feature the Thomas W. Small estate collection of Meyersdale, PA. Mr. Small was a well-known expert on early Aladdin and other kerosene mantle lamps and had just completed a book with James Christner titled Aladdin to Ziu: The Early Kerosene Mantle Lamp Era in America. More than 170 pieces illustrated in the book are included in the auction. Aladdin lamps are the main focus of the Small collection and include rare early models, many unburned and in their original box, a unique kerosene floor lamp, extremely rare Sales Agent sample cases, hanging and student lamps, advertising items, rare ephemera, &c. Company president Jeffrey S. Evans commented, “Tom Small had been collecting and studying Aladdin and related early mantle lamps for nearly 50 years. His ultimate goal was to acquire every Aladdin model in unburned condition and in its original box. This quest took him across the Midwestern United States on numerous occasions stopping at every country store he could locate and searching their storage areas for unsold Aladdin stock.” Evans added, “Since the Midwest was the area where Aladdin lamps were most popular, Tom was able to find many new, old lamps tucked away in attics and store rooms, as well as advertising ephemera and all types of Aladdin accessories. His collection contains more of this material than anyone else has ever put together.” In addition, the Small collection includes many early pre-Aladdin mantle lamps and related German incandescent lamps.

The auction will also feature the final installment of the Culver Collection, Tom & Michael Andrews, Berlin, MD including a large selection of Victorian hanging, parlor, student, and banquet lamps; Victorian opalescent lamps; other kerosene lighting including Wedding lamps; lighting trade catalogues; plus more.

An uncatalogued session of all types of lamps and lamp parts will be held on Friday, March 22 beginning at 4:00 pm. These lots will only be available to bidders in attendance.

The auction catalogue will be posted at as well as on Live Auctioneers and Invaluable on March 8.

Public preview of the auction will be March 20-22 from 10am to 6pm daily, and the day of the auction beginning at 8am. The auction gallery is located at 2177 Green Valley Lane, Mt. Crawford, VA. For further information visit, e-mail, or call 540.434.3939.
