PAGE / ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA STAVE-TYPE WOVEN-SPLINT BISCUIT BASKET, white oak, low circular body with X-wrapped rim, kick-up bottom, and high arched double handle with X-wrapped pinnacle. Original dry natural surface.

Condition: Very good overall condition, scattered very minor losses, and with areas of expected usage wear.

Circa : Late 19th/first quarter 20th century.

Item Dimensions: 8 3/4" HOA, 11" D rim.

Provenance : From the collection of Katy and Jim Sheppard, Weston, WV.
Found in the Shenandoah Valley.

Attribution : Probably by one of the Nichols family of basketmakers, Page / Rockingham Co., VA.

Catalog Note : Catalogue Note: A small number of these very unusual baskets have been recorded. It is thought that they were used to serve or transport hot biscuits, rolls, or muffins. A cloth would have lined the basket and the handles would have supported a cloth covering to retain heat and guard against insects.
